In the past couple years, the folks at adidas have done an incredible job bringing the Reebok brand back from the dead following a lack of producing anything special after the $3.8 billion acquisition was approved in January 2006. Its ZigTech and RealFlex lines have been successful and it got as much as it could out of the toning space before the FTC fined the company for $25 million for unsubstantiated claims related to its EasyTone shoes

Caveman Diet Gains Popularity - Monday, September 19, 2011

Could Paleolithic man hold the key to today's nutrition problems? A growing number of adherents to the so-called "caveman" diet contend that a return to the hunter-gatherer foods of the Stone Age — heavy on meats, devoid of most grains — could alleviate problems like obesity, Type-2 diabetes, and many coronary problems. The Paleo diet movement is backed by some academics and fitness gurus, and has gained some praise in medical research in the United States and elsewhere even though it goes against recommendations of most mainstream nutritionists and government guidelines. Loren Cordain, a professor of health and exercise science at Colorado State University, said he believes millions in the United States and elsewhere are following the Paleo diet movement, based on sales of books such as his own and Internet trends. "It was an obscure idea 10 years ago, and in the last two to three years it has become known worldwide," Cordain, one the leading academics backing the Paleo diet, told AFP. "There are at least a half-dozen books on the best-seller list that are promoting this," he added. The underlying basis for the Stone Age diet is a belief that homo sapiens evolved into modern humans with a hunter-gatherer diet that promoted brain function and overall health. Backers say the human genome is essentially unchanged from the end of the Paleolithic era 10,000 years ago after evolving over millions of years. "It's intuitive," Cordain said. "Obviously you can't feed meat to a horse, you can't feed hay to a cat. The reason for that is that their genes were shaped in different ecological niches

9 Foods Not to Give Your Kids - Friday, September 02, 2011

blogImg

By Joe Wilkes If you've followed the news on childhood obesity lately, you know the state of affairs is pretty grim. Childhood obesity rates have tripled over the past two decades, and most signs point to the next generation being the first whose life expectancy will be shorter than their parents'. Much of the blame for this trend has deservedly been laid at the feet of the producers and marketers of unhealthy food aimed at our youngest consumers, whose parents face an uphill battle: trying to pit fresh, healthy foods devoid of mascots or sidekicks against superheroes and cartoon animals in a struggle to tempt their children's palates and stomachs.

CrossFit: Where Navy SEALs and Pregnant Soccer Moms Help Each Other Get Ripped - Thursday, August 18, 2011

A new rapidly growing, community oriented exercise gym, CrossFit, has developed its own multi-million-dollar slice of the fitness industry on the backs of all-star athletes, elite armed forces, and power moms. "Oh, F**k!" huffs a tree trunk of a man, whose hunched, sweat-drenched body looks like it was just tossed out of a professional wrestling match. I feel naively sympathetic, since I don't realize it is now my turn with the same workout. At CrossFit gyms, everyone does the same drills, from expectant mothers to Navy SEALs. During my four-month experiment with the growing exercise brand, I learned that CrossFit proposes that elite athleticism and seemingly impossible workouts can be survived with a little help from supportive peers pushing each other through the pain. Group workouts pack the most functional movements of Olympic lifting, gymnastics, and calisthenics into a 10-to-20-minute sprint. The routines are slowly creeping their way into the regiments of all-star athletes and armed forces divisions around the world. They've put me in the best shape of my life.

Massage Improves Health 7 Ways - Thursday, August 04, 2011

News Max Health put out a must read article on massage therapy. I am a huge promoter of massage therapy as I get one once a week. It is the best way to ease pain, release stress, and help move around the lactic acid in your mucles.........Take a look at he article..............By Sylvia Booth Hubbard Print this Page Forward Page Email Us It's not hokum — massage therapy is real medicine without the shots and pills. Research suggests it can boost immunity, help sleeplessness, and more. And you don't even need a prescription, even though some doctors "prescribe" it regularly for themselves. "All of our surgery patients are offered the treatment — I call it 'service with a smile' —and it's a mandatory weekly prescription I give myself," Mehmet Oz, M.D., director of the Cardiovascular Institute and Complementary Medicine Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital, told CNN. Here are some of the benefits you may receive from massage therapy. For the best results, put yourself in the hands of a trained professional: 1. Ease pain. Massages are particularly effective for back pain, working better even than chiropractic therapy or acupuncture, according to researchers at the Group Health Center for Health Studies in Seattle. Massages help block your nervous system's pain receptors by boosting serotonin and dopamine, which are the feel-good hormones, while lowering the stress hormone cortisol. CrossFit’s Relationship with Reebok Enhances Its Financial and Commercial Credibility - Tuesday, July 26, 2011

CrossFit’s Relationship with Reebok Enhances Its Financial and Commercial Credibility Jul. 22 2011 - 3:28 pm | 6,440 views | 0 recommendations | 0 comments posted by PATRICK RISHE I’m not often prophetic, but must pat myself on the back for calling this one. After last year’s CrossFit Games, I posted a piece entitled The CrossFit Games: An Action Sport Investment Opportunity in the Making. A year later, and we are roughly one week away from the 2011 Reebok CrossFit Games. Call me Nostradamus. And call this sport one of the fastest growing sports in America which only looks to build upon the financial and popular successes it has achieved in just one short year. Reebok Joins the Fray and Raises the Stakes The financial prosperity and enhanced visibility that CrossFit has enjoyed in the last 12 months have been tremendous, thanks in large part to their relatively new partnership with sports giant Reebok who has signed a 10-year deal with CrossFit. “We have seen large gains in commercial success with bringing on Reebok as a partner to the CrossFit Games“, according to Dave Castro, Director of the CrossFit Games as well as Director of Training. ”Reebok is helping us take the event to the next level in terms of exposure and what they can do for the athletes.” see the rest of the article

What is CrossFit and why is it better than other workout programs? - Saturday, July 02, 2011

By Erin Okonek, Coach fo CrossFit Olympic Lifting Courses By definition, Crossfit workouts are constantly varied, functional movements, performed at a high intensity. More simply stated, "It is hard as F*@#! “ Yet these attributes do not sufficiently capture the true meaning of Crossfit and inadequately defend Crossfit to the copious amounts of other workout programs that people are bombarded with on a daily basis. Overall, Crossfit is not a workout program, it is a lifestyle. (I would personally go even further to state that it is my religion and therapy). Granted for some of us Crossfit addicts, it is about "chasing the rabbit", competing, and becoming a Firebreather, but most importantly, Crossfit, unlike other workout programs, makes us better overall people by creating strong, confident, and dedicated individuals. Fat Substitutes Actually May Make Us Fat - Thursday, June 23, 2011

Do foods made with fat substitutes actually make us fatter? Yes, according to a study by Purdue University researchers who discovered fat substitutes not only don’t help consumers lose weight, but they may actually help them pack on pounds. The study, reported in a blog in the Washington Post, looked at two groups of rats — one fed a high-fat diet, the other fed a low-fat one. The high-fat diet group was further divided into two more groups including one fed high-fat, high-calorie Pringles chips in addition to its regular food, and the other given those same chips some days and low-calorie Pringles made with olestra on other days. Olestra is a fat substitute with no calories. “The rats that alternated between the full-fat and olestra-containing chips ate more food overall, gained more weight, and grew more fatty tissue than did the rats that ate only full-fat, higher-calorie chips,” Jennifer LaRue Huget reports in her blog. “Okay, so it’s just a rat study. But rats and humans have similar biological responses to food,” she writes. To read the full Washington Post blog, Go Here Now. © 2011 Newsmax. All rights reserved. Health Works Courtesy of CrossFit Journal - Wednesday, June 08, 2011

Dr. Will Wright explains “rhabdo” and what you can do to prevent it. This review article was written to remind the CrossFit community that rhabdomyolysis is a real and dangerous medical condition which creates a need for introductory workouts that are appropriate and safe for new clients. In recent months, there have been a few incidents of rhabdomyolysis in our affiliates, some of which could have clearly been avoided with more precaution and concern for our newest affiliate members.

Wikipedia Description Of CrossFit - Wednesday, May 11, 2011

Description From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia CrossFit is an elite strength and conditioning brand which combines weightlifting, sprinting, and gymnastics, powerlifting, kettlebell training, plyometrics, rowing, and medicine ball training. CrossFit says that proficiency is required in each of ten fitness domains: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, agility, balance, coordination, and accuracy. It defines fitness as increased work capacity across all these domains and says its program achieves this by provoking neurologic and hormonal adaptations across all metabolic pathways. CrossFit athletes run, row, jump rope, climb rope and carry odd objects. They frequently move large loads quickly over short distances, and use powerlifting and Olympic weightlifting techniques. CrossFit athletes also use dumbbells, gymnastics rings, pull-up bars, kettlebells, and many bodyweight exercises. CrossFit is used in nearly 2,000 gyms worldwide and by many fire departments, law enforcement agencies, and military organizations including the Canadian Forces, and the Royal Danish Life Guards.

A workout that's fast, furious and not for the faint of hear - Wednesday, April 20, 2011

CrossFit promises -- and delivers -- an intense blend of aerobic and strength training. By Roy M. Wallack, Special to The Times April 10, 2006 I'm hyperventilating. Twelve minutes into what I thought was a simple, 20-minute workout of pull-ups, kettle bell swings and short-distance runs, I'm bent over with my hands on my knees, mouth wide open, head spinning, shoulders numb and torso heaving with giant belly breaths. I'm spent, I feel nauseated. "Hurry up!" urges my trainer. "You're on the verge of being beaten by a 38-year-old housewife who is four months pregnant!" As a lifelong gym rat, endurance cyclist and runner, I thought I was fit — until my first day of CrossFit, a free, fast-growing, largely underground workout plan that some say is rewriting the rules of fitness. Take Your Multivitamin - Friday, April 15, 2011

Dr. Brownstein's Answer: A Swedish study found evidence that it does. Scientists followed nearly 34,000 Swedish women for 10 years to ascertain if multivitamin use would decrease the risk of developing a heart attack. Compared to women without heart disease who did not take a multivitamin, women who took a daily multivitamin had 27 percent less chance of having a heart attack. The women who took other supplements (in addition to a multivitamin) had a 30 percent lower risk of heart attack. In women who had a prior history of heart disease, those who took a multivitamin had a 41 percent lowered risk of heart attack compared to women who did not take a multivitamin. A good multivitamin can provide the body with the basic raw materials it needs to function. My experience has shown that nearly all patients are suffering from mineral and vitamin deficiencies. A good multivitamin is worth the money. Bio-Multi Plus (Biotics Research), Optivite, and Gynovite (both from Optimox) are examples of high-quality multivitamins. © 2011 Newsmax. All rights reserved.
